CQ Boosts Health, Budget, Energy Coverage

Washington, D.C. (March 22) – CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group Business, announced the hiring of four reporters at CQ News. The additions, who come from Politico, Market News International and Inside Health Policy, bolster CQ’s top expertise in health, budget and energy.

Erin MershonErin Mershon is joining CQ from Politico, where she has been covering health care and, before that, technology. She covered Congress for Communications Daily and for National Journal, and wrote about campaigns for The Huffington Post. Mershon also interned at Roll Call, CQ’s partner publication, and PolitiFact. She graduated from Kenyon College, where she studied political science and ran the college newspaper.

ShuttJennifer Shutt has been hired as a budget and appropriations reporter. She comes to CQ from Politico, where she was a web producer and wrote Politico Pro’s afternoon energy tip sheet. Prior to her arrival in Washington, the Pennsylvania State University journalism graduate was an award-winning reporter on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, where she covered the Maryland General Assembly, county government and politics for The Daily Times of Salisbury.

NawagunaElvina Nawaguna joins as a senior energy reporter covering Congress and the federal agencies. She’s been at Market News International, covering economics and energy in Washington. Previously, she worked as a data reporter at the Reuters Washington bureau. Nawaguna got her start in journalism covering health, education and women’s issues at The New Vision, a daily in Kampala, Uganda. She earned her bachelor’s degree at Makerere University in Kampala, and has a master’s degree from the Cronkite School at Arizona State University.

Joe Williams comes to CQ from Inside Health Policy, where he covered the Food and Drug Administration. He’ll play a similar role on CQ’s Health Care Team under newly promoted editor Rebecca Adams. A former staffer on the House Natural Resources Committee, Williams graduated from Bradley University with a B.S. in organizational communication.
