CQ Roll Call Announces the Roll Call Taste of America 2014 Winner: Utah’s Cherry Cobbler

Washington, D.C. (June 26, 2014) – CQ Roll Call announced today that, after six weeks and four rounds of voting, Utah’s Cherry Cobbler has won Roll Call’s fourth annual Taste of America contest. Utah won the Taste of America 2012, making it the first repeat winner. The Cherry Cobbler was celebrated on June 25 at Roll Call’s Taste of America awards reception held prior to the Congressional Baseball Game.

A strong showing throughout the competition, the Cherry Cobbler defeated Washington’s Smoked Salmon, New Mexico’s Frijoles and Wyoming’s Buffalo Burger to make it to the finals. The Cherry Cobbler then prevailed over tough competition in the final round, beating Oregon’s Blackberry Pie, Iowa Bacon, Illinois Deep Dish Pizza, the Maine Lobster Roll, Maryland Crab Cakes, Kentucky Fried Chicken and North Carolina-style BBQ. Maine’s Lobster Roll and Maryland’s Crab Cakes finished a strong second and third, but could not overcome the collective sense of determination and state pride from the Utah Congressional offices in the final week of voting.

Lead and founding sponsor, the National Beer Wholesalers Association, recommends enjoying a wild ale with the Cherry Cobbler. The other founding sponsor, National Restaurant Association, suggests stopping by The Roof Restaurant to enjoy the dish if your planning to visit Salt Lake City, Utah this summer.

In its fourth year, Roll Call’s Taste of America competition pitted foods from around the country against each other in a March Madness-style bracket. Votes were collected over the course of four rounds and six weeks for the coveted Roll Call Taste of America trophy and bragging rights for the next year.

“The contest is gaining momentum, says Beth Bronder, Roll Call’s Publisher, “Each year we’ve see an increase in overall voting and regional media coverage.  Some Members of Congress have personally gotten involved, using Twitter to tout their foods popularity or taunt their competition.  All in good fun, of course!”

Roll Call thanks the Taste of America 2014 sponsors for their support. They are the National Beer Wholesalers Association, the National Restaurant Association, National Pork Producers Council, the American Frozen Food Institute, the Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen.
