Melinda Henneberger Joins Roll Call As Editor-in-Chief and Vice President

Washington, D.C. (Oct. 21, 2015) — CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group business, has named Melinda Henneberger the next Editor-in-Chief of Roll Call.

Henneberger joins Roll Call from Bloomberg Politics, where she covered the 2016 presidential campaign as a senior writer.

“I couldn’t be more enthusiastic about the chance to lead Roll Call’s talented team in this uncertain but also incredibly exciting moment for journalism,” Henneberger said. “And I want to thank Congress in advance for supplying us with such sure-fire material.”

Henneberger brings to the new role a unique combination of front-line reporting, editing leadership, and entrepreneurial achievement that will strengthen and expand the digital audience for Capitol Hill’s storied newspaper.

As founder and editor-in-chief of AOL’s Politics Daily, Henneberger conceptualized the site, worked with designers on its look, and developed a talent team of writers and editors whose work attracted 8 million monthly unique visitors.  At The Washington Post, she launched, managed and edited the paper’s opinion blog of women writers, She the People, and wrote a reported column.

Previously, Henneberger spent a decade at The New York Times, as a metro reporter, Washington correspondent and Bureau Chief in Rome.

She was a staff writer for New York Newsday and the Dallas Morning News and her work has appeared in Commonweal, GQ, Time, Newsweek and Reader’s Digest. In the course of her career, she has covered everything from the Dallas police beat, poverty in suburban New York City to the bureaucratic machinations of the Vatican.

Henneberger, who will also be a Vice President of CQ Roll Call, will report to Senior Vice President and Chief Content Officer David Ellis.

“Melinda is a first-class reporter and a digital innovator with a proven record of building an audience,” said Ellis. “She is perfectly suited to put new energy, talent and long-term vision into Roll Call.”

Henneberger will combine her daily editorial duties with a robust personal media presence, Ellis said. She frequently appears on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” and has been a featured guest on HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher,” and served as a panelist on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

She was a 2013 fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard’s Kennedy School, serves on the board of the National Press Foundation, and is a visiting fellow at Catholic University’s Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies.

Roll Call has been the No. 1 source of inside information about the workings of Capitol Hill since 1955, and some of the city’s most prominent reporters got their start at the newspaper, including Susan Glasser, Jake Tapper, Paul Kane and Paul Singer.

Henneberger will begin her new role on Nov. 2.
