Washington (March 7) – CQ Roll Call, an Economist Group business, today announced that Patrick Thornton joins the company as senior director of user experience and strategy.
“Patrick is a great addition to CQ Roll Call. He will be pushing ahead on delivering excellent experiences for our clients,” said Matt Mansfield, vice president for product innovation.
Thornton joins CQ Roll Call from Washingtonian, where he led a top-to-bottom reassessment of washingtonian.com, which re-launched earlier this year focused on mobile users. As much as 60 percent of Washingtonian’s traffic this year expected to come from mobile.
“The talent CQ Roll Call has been assembling is one of the major reasons I’m excited to join the company,” Thornton said. “This is one of the places that anyone looking to push journalism forward would want to be. We’re building a very user-focused company making products that people find informational and enjoyable.’’
While at Washingtonian, Thornton also headed digital for Washingtonian Custom Media, an in-house creative agency that handles creative projects for a variety of clients around the world.
In his spare time, Thornton produces a podcast called the Interchange Project with Lehigh University journalism professor Jeremy Littau, where they exchange insights on the intersection of technology and the liberal arts.
Thornton joins a wave of recent hires in user experience and visual journalism at CQ Roll Call, including Jerry Sealy, who came from National Geographic and leads visual presentation, and Kris Viesselman, the senior director who came on board in December and is now leading a redesign of RollCall.com expected to launch this month.
