Taste of America 2014 Enters the Sweet 16

Washington D.C. (June 2, 2014) – CQ Roll Call announced today that more than 158,000 votes have been cast in Roll Call’s Taste of America contest as the competition moves into the Sweet 16 round.  No surprise that regional favorites like the Illinois Deep Dish Pizza and Maryland Crab Cakes will advance, however the defending champs, West Virginia’s beloved Pepperoni Roll was voted out by Delaware’s Boardwalk Fries.

“Roll Call readers are passionate about their states and their home town foods and we always see a few dark horse entries that post big numbers. Each year we see the overall vote tally rise far above our expectations,” says Roll Call Publisher, Beth Bronder. “It’s quite a popular contest among Hill staffers and their members. Regional food is something that people rally around even in an institution known for its dissension.”

The following foods will now advance to round 3:

West
Utah – Cherry Cobbler
Wyoming – Buffalo Burger
Montana – Steak
Oregon – Blackberry Pie

Midwest
Iowa – Bacon
Wisconsin – Macaroni & Cheese
Illinois – Deep Dish Pizza
Wisconsin 2 – Bratwurst

Northeast
Delaware – Boardwalk Fries
Maine – Lobster Roll
Maryland – Crab Cakes
New York – Buffalo Wings

Southeast
Kentucky – Fried Chicken
Tennessee – Memphis BBQ
Texas – Corn Dogs
North Carolina – NC BBQ

Each unique state dish now earns its own beer pairing, provided by the experts at the National Beer Wholesalers Association, an organization supporting the Taste of America competition as both its lead and founding sponsor.

“Thanks to an independent system of distribution, the American beer marketplace offers an unparalleled number of styles, varieties and flavors to consumers from coast to coast,” said National Beer Wholesalers Association Senior Vice President Rebecca Spicer. “Beer enhances the flavor of food, but food also enhances the flavor of beer. With thousands of different labels of beer for Americans to enjoy, there is a perfect pairing for every dish.”

In addition, the Sweet 16 round will feature restaurant suggestions for each food. Provided by the National Restaurant Association, these suggestions will showcase restaurants across the country serving each of the Sweet 16 dishes.

The Sweet 16 round continues through Friday, June 6. The final round will begin on June 9th and run through June 20th. The Elite 8 winners will be celebrated at a reception prior to the Congressional Baseball Game on June 25th at Nationals Park where the winner of Taste of America 2014 will be announced.  Food, beer and baseball will all come together, making this event the ultimate American celebration.

Roll Call thanks the Taste of America 2014 sponsors for their support. They are the National Beer Wholesalers Association, the National Restaurant Association, National Pork Producers Council, and the American Frozen Food Institute and the Ford Motor Company.
