Washington, D.C. (May 9, 2016) – CQ Roll Call announced today the launch of Roll Call’s annual food competition, Taste of America. Taste of America, a tournament-style food competition, pits state against state in an NCAA March Madness-like bracket. Now in its sixth year, Taste of America allows readers to vote with their taste buds and support their state. Readers will decide which food reigns supreme by voting online for their state’s signature dish at rollcalltasteofamerica.com.
“We are thrilled to once again host Taste of America, one of the signature events of the summer, in conjunction with the Congressional Baseball Game,” said David Meyers, vice president of Roll Call. “Roll Call founded the game more than 50 years ago and is proud to continue as a lead sponsor. Through Taste of America we make the game a more inclusive experience for our readers and advertisers — and get to offer something beyond the standard ballpark fare during the game.”
In 2015, Indiana’s pork tenderloin brought home the trophy in its first year on the bracket. Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-Ind.) accepted the Taste of America trophy during the Taste of America reception at Nationals Park prior to the Congressional Baseball Game.
Voting will run through June 17 with four rounds of competition. The Elite Eight foods will be honored at a reception prior to the Congressional Baseball Game for Charity on June 23, where the winner will be announced.
Roll Call has covered the Capitol Hill community for over 60 years and has been intimately involved with the Congressional Baseball Game since 1961. Taste of America builds upon that tradition to celebrate the intersection of food, America’s favorite pastime and state pride.
The National Beer Wholesalers Association, a founding sponsor, the American Frozen Food Institute, and the National Council of Chain Restaurants are this year’s Taste of America sponsors, with other sponsorship opportunities available throughout the multi-week contest.
Official rules: Brackets will feature 64 foods from across the country organized by region. States will play within their region. The Elite Eight will face off in the fourth and final round. The champion will be the state food that receives the most votes during the final round. The winner will be announced at a reception at Nationals Park on June 23, 2016.
